Sharing ideas is something that students with autism find difficult. Creating texts with pen and paper, even using pictures can be a frustrating experience due to problems with communication and fine motor skills. Using ICT can help them to create pieces of work in order to demonstrate their abilities and also to share their ideas.
Faux (2006) found that students with communication difficulties were better able to create a narrative with developed characters using ICTs and multimedia tools such as images, videos, sound and written words. Creating a digital narrative encourages students to think creatively and express themselves in ways that are not possible for them without the use of ICTs. Students will be encouraged to photograph activities during their day so that they can practise creating these with familiar stimuli.
Whilst there are many programs that can, and will be used in the classroom to help to create these stories, one that I would like to show you is Voki. Voki is a tool that students can use to quite literally give their characters a voice in their multimodal pieces. This will be used to encourage students to see things from another perspective and speak from the point of view of the character.
ICTs give autistic students an opportunity to express themselves in a way that has previously not been available to them. It is, and should be a fully integrated part of their learning environment and experience.
