ICTs open up a world of possibilities for autistic students. I briefly touched on the benefits to academic engagement on the "Explore" page, however here I want to look more closely at engagement with others.
Students with ASD have great difficulty expressing themselves. Their language is often delayed and basic communication is challenging. ICTs enable these students to develop a voice of their own. This is an incredible tool that encourages them to think independently and express ideas, needs and desires. Reallookautism (2012) created the video on the left which shows how an autistic student has learnt to communicate effectively using ICT. You will notice in the video that the student is working towards forming basic sentences with this technology. This also allows the student to string words together to form ideas which can be communicated verbally through the device or converted to a file which can be sent as text electronically (or printed). Stokes (2001) states that the use of such technologies can help students develop expressive communication skills, social interaction skills and skills required for daily living as well as assisting them academically. The use of ICT in this area is to encourage engagement with others in order to develop deeper understandings and social relationships. |
